Been there many times over the years. Although I agree with other viewers the service can be sketchy at times the food is always awesome and the drinks are delish. I love right next door and I know I'm lucky for that. Enjoy!

Small local Mexican restaurant with amazing food, awesome service, and decent prices. Great for lunch and dinner. Get the taco salad, you won't be disappointed!

Wow! A hidden gem in St Louise Park. I love the hole in the wall family owned establishments. I stopped by for a quick lunch and was delightfully surprise of their food. The service was exemplary even with about 80% of the table filled with customers. I had the enchilada and burrito combination with refried beans. The enchilada sauce was very flavorful but not overly powering or spicy. Of course, this came with chips and salsa. All in all I have found my favorite Mexican restaurant.

Very good food but could be spicier. The complementary chips and salsa includes both a ranch dressing and fairly spicy house made salsa. All the standard Americanized Mexican food is there but also some more authentic items. As an reviewer, stated it is a "hidden gem" and I suggest you give them a try.

Crappy service. A waitress that cannot understand any English at all. Any. Asked for a glass of water 3 times, chips twice. Waited 30 minutes to get our food. Asked for food status a few times, now paranoid theyre gonna spit in my food, never coming back.

It won't make you feel like you're in Baja, or even SoCal for that matter, but they do serve a tasty lunch. I can't figure out why no carnitas but I always have a good lunch with plenty to bring home leftovers to the hubby. Reliable stop after feeding shoe fetish at nearby DSW.

Food tastes authentic and portions are huge! I'd eat here every time I craved Mexican. Super casual place on the smaller side. Every time I've eaten here I've gotten full and satisfied my taste buds.

Food tasted good. Wait staff is non existent. Took almost 20 min for us to get our check as our waiter didn't stop by. Called the manager over and he acted like it wasn't a big deal. We were charged for large margaritas when we only ordered the small size. If wait staff wasn't so bad I would def go back. But I won't be back for sure.

Our server Lissette went out her way to make my meal perfect. I ordered a tostada with no meat, substitute guacamole. It came with both, which she noticed and promptly fixed. My companion's taco shell got soft sitting in refried beans, so they also brought out a brand new shell with fixings for him. Ole!!

I've been a loyal costumer for years. From when it was El Gordo up until now. Food is always pretty good and the prices are right. But today i tried to use a Happenings coupon and they wouldn't accept it. I dont care about most things, but this is a huge pet peeve of mine. A restaurant has to register for Happenings, so to register and then not accept the coupons is just laughable. You lose so many customers over such a silly business decision.

My wife and I go to El Patron when we're craving Mexican food. Any other place is just too far from us. Carlos, who used to wait on us was always nice and whenever we'd come there, he knew what we would order. We haven't seen him in over a year so we're thinking he doesn't work there anymore. Besides that, the food is good. We did notice a change in the food. It tastes different now (in not such a good way). We believe they switched up their products. Don't change what's good just to save yourself some money unless the change is for the better. Service can be slow, even on a slow day but the food makes up for it. They used to have a large menu which we liked but with them downsizing their menu, we found that at times, the waiters were confused and unsure of what we ordered so they would have to look at the menu themselves. There were a few times we were told that some items on the menu isn't listed correctly or told that they don't actually have that. We do recommend El Patron as we have been coming here for about 6 years now, even when it was still El Gordo. Just don't be surprised if some of the waiters don't attend to you right away. There are some waiters who are really good at what they do and because of that and the food, it makes up for it big time.

El Patron is my favorite Mexican Restaurant in the Twin Cities. Every meal I have tried is excellent. The margaritas are awesome and the staff is friendly. I see some of the reviews complaining about the service. They are a little slow when they are busy but.... that is to be expected when you go in any restaurant that is busy. I recommend this place hands down.

A good restaurant. They give you large portions. I usually get the burritos. Their salsa is really good but the are pretty stingy with the size of that portion. It would be nice if it had more spice, which is why more of their delicious salsa would help.

By far my favorite Mexican joint! Big margaritas for a good price and the shrimp....are huge!!!! My shrimp quesadilla was flooded with shrimp. Staff are always friendly :) I took one star off because service is slow. Friendly but slow.

It is hard to admit this to myself, but I eat at El Patron at least once a week. I gave myself the goal of trying every specialty dish and they do not disappoint. Every dish I try is better than the last and the creamy dip that comes with the chips and salsa blows my mind. Highly recommend El Patron as a SLP staple.

I admit I wasnt expecting much from El Patron... A small, Mexican restaurant in a strip mall along Hwy 7. The restaurant seems almost out of place for a "sit-down" style establishment, but Im always a sucker for Mexican food and had to check it out. The people working there were very polite right off the bat which definitely goes a long way in my opinion. The server and the host were extremely friendly. The atmosphere was much better than expected. There was hardly anyone in the restaurant, the lighting was somewhat dim but not too much, and the music was appropriate. The food is always the main consideration for any restaurant and I definitely pleased. I am known to be quite critical of Mexican and Japanese restaurants, but Id definitely go back to El Patron. The prices were affordable and the quantity and quality of food was good. I had Yolandas which was three chicken enchiladas with salad and rice ($8.70). The enchiladas were packed full of chicken--very impressive compared to most places. The flavors were very good as well. You wouldnt think there would be anything special about the food from looking at the menu which is typical of all restaurants in this style... But it was certainly satisfying. Pros: Affordable prices, polite staff, tasty food, enchiladas have tons of chicken in them, appropriate music/ambience Cons: In a strip mall in St. Louis Park, food doesnt blow you away but it's definitely solid

Dining at El Patron on Friday, August 23, was one of the worst experiences in the Twin Cities. The complimentary chips were stale and the salsa underwhelming. The $8.00 price for the large watered down margarita was disappointing. We ordered the chicken fajitas, which came with 3 small flour tortillas, and the burrito gordo with green salsa verde. The burrito was incredibly salty and the ingredients substandard - dried up pieces of beef and chicken. The cook must have used a cup of salt to prepare the burrito. The fajita entree was substandard and El Patron charged an extra $1.15 for another round of small flour tortillas, unusual given the large quantity of fajita ingredients. We had gone to this restaurant with a coupon, which was not valid on Friday and Saturday nights. We had place the coupon on the table when were were first sat. It was only at the end of the meal when the waitress stated that the coupon was not valid. Granted, the exclusion was written in fine print on the coupon and we should have noticed the exclusion. However, the waitress should have advised us about the coupon not being valid at the beginning of the service. Service was generally poor at this family owned restaurant. Overall recommendation is to drive pass El Patron if you want a decent Mexican meal. Food and drinks were overpriced and the entrees overly salty. There are definitely better Mexican restaurant options in the Twin Cities.

The wait staff is unprofessional and rude. The service is terrible and the food is mediocre- when they don't mess up your order. Which, statistically happens 50% of the time..

Having moved here from San Francisco & San Diego, we missed good Mexican food. There had to be more than Chipolte and El Pollo Loco up here in the north. We even tried El Burrito in St Paul which left us wanting. While running errands, we stopped in at El Patron and were pleasantly surprised. The salsa actually had some flavor and heat to it. The food was the best Mexican food we've found yet. The staff could be a little warmer. We thanked the hostess/waitress profusely for such good food, but she seemed underwhelmed and a little timid.

After driving past here quite a few times, my husband and I decided to check it out. Now I wish that we had kept driving. This restaurant served up some of the worst Mexican food I have ever tasted! I ordered enchiladas and was served something that didn't look anything like the appetizing meal I had expected. To be honest, the food I was served almost looked like it had been pre-chewed before being put on my plate. It tasted even worse than it looked--cold, mushy and flavorless. The poor service didn't make things any better. We waited for almost 15 minutes before a server even acknowledged us. Then, we never received any refills on our water and it took the server another 20 minutes to bring us our check. I will not be back here again, and I suggest you look elsewhere if you want good Mexican food.

Really fast, friendly service! Food was yummy, had the chicken chimichanga lunch special and a Corona-rita. You can't beat the prices! I will definitely be back. Gracias, amigos!!

My quest for some good, authentic Mexican food lead me here. I was disappointed to find that it's pretty Americanized here. The beef in my tacos was a bit dry and the tortillas had a strange gummy texture to them. So the quest continues.

Staff is very friendly, the food is good but not stellar. Overall I like the place and plan on going back but it is not my fav in town by any means. My dad loves this place though.

I've been here several times and the food, service and atmosphere is great. My son used to not be very big on Mexican food but now it's a reward for him when he gets all of his chores done for the week. and it's a treat for me to, biggest margarita I've had.

Finally a great Mexican restaurant in Mpls suburbs! We have eaten there multiple times and it has always been a great experience. Staff are friendly, service is good, food comes out fast and its always delicious. I don't understand the negative reviews, moderate priced - good quality awesome tasting mexican food is all I have ever had here.

Ive been here a few times now, for lunch on a Saturday once and a few times for dinner. Love the chips and salsa especially the white sauce! Chicken tacos are my favorite things by far. Always really fast service and super friendly servers! Love that they speak Spanish to you if you wish! Prices seem to be pretty fair compared to other Mexican restaurants I've been to. They offer combination plates which is a nice way to try more than one thing at a time. Beans are not worth the calories but everything else is delicious!

Food was okay, but not as autentico as I'd have liked. Staff was stiff. One good point: nice atmosphere.

El Patron is part of the El Loro family of Mexican restaurants. I've eaten at the El Loro in Eagan many, many times over the years as it is very close to work, but I've gone there many times on nights and weekends, too. Since I live closer to St. Louis Park than I do Eagan, I thought I would try this restaurant and see if it were as good as El Loro. I wanted it to be good, so I did not have to drive as far on weekends, but sadly, I will still be driving to Eagan. El Patron was a huge disappointment. The salsa (for the chips) is a critical factor in what makes a good Mexican restaurant. El Patron's is not very good. Their salsa is very watery. The serving bowls for the salsa are extremely small, so once you dip about 10 chips or so to dig out the few chunks of tomato and onion in the salsa, you are left with pink water that will not stick to a chip. I will say that the salsa flavor is ok, but why make it so watery? The wait staff we had at El Patron seemed very in experienced. If you didn't ask for something - more water, more salsa, more chips - you didn't get it. I could go on about this, but it's not worth the time. If anyone from El Loro happens to read this, you have a great restaurant in Eagan with El Loro, but you have a some big problems with El Patron.

Ordered take out for the 1st time and some how ended up with 2 entrees. I love Mexican do leftovers are always good. The gentleman up front kept asking me it that was ok. In the end he said you know what I'll just charge you for the one dinner. Good food just don't be surprised if there is some mix up on your order.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
